Over the years, we have worked with several fertilizer manufacturers in helping them meet their required specifications to produce safe and effective fertilizer for mass consumption. These requirements have ranged from mix-only processing of sulfur to a pelletized, shelf-ready end product made from organic ingredients. In all cases, our high shear mixers outperformed alternative solutions and/or improved efficiencies from existing processes.

Fertilizer manufacturing is a process by which raw materials/nutrients, often in powder form, are mixed and agitated with a binder until pelletized for easier spreading with minimal dust dispersion. The pellets must be a homogeneous mix of nutrients to ensure maximum effectiveness without over/under saturation when applied. Furthermore, the size of the pellets will vary based on its intended application. For example, fertilizer for commercial agricultural fields will not necessarily be the same size as that used on golf course greens.

High shear mixers manufactured by Lancaster Products are the ideal machines for fertilizer manufacturers. Not only will these machines meet the requirements of a homogeneous mixture, but they also allow for multiple products to be run in the same machine on a batch-by-batch basis. Our engineering and materials processing staff will apply their experience to define the process for varying pellet sizes. This also allows for a tighter control on the yield rates for each type of fertilizer manufactured and thus a higher rate of predictability when forecasting production schedules.

Synergies Between Lancaster Products, Bradley Pulverizer, and Kercher Industries Lead to Improved Efficiencies and Market Growth

In January of 2020, Lancaster Products/Kercher Enterprises acquired the assets of Bradley Pulverizer and we are thrilled to add over 130 more years of industry experience to our 70+ years. While each will continue to operate as 3 separate businesses, we are already leveraging the benefits of the new acquisition. When Curt Snyder (owner) first explored this opportunity he immediately identified 5 primary synergies between the businesses that would benefit from cross-company collaboration and improve efficiencies to benefit our organizations as well as our combined pool of clients.

In just a short amount of time a strategic plan has been instituted to align the best of all 3 companies with a focus on the following:

    1. Product Line Synergies
    2. Overlap in Customers and Industries Served
    3. Expansion of Manufacturing and Fabrication Capabilities
    4. Leverage Existing Global Sales Channels
    5. Enhanced Business Efficiencies

Case Study – High Shear Mixing of Clay Compositions

High Shear mixers are used in a wide variety of applications in many different industries. Finding the right blend and being able to produce the same mix consistently is the key to success at Highwater Clays, a clay and glaze supplier to the arts & crafts industry. The company has two locations with the main production center located in Ashville, North Carolina. Highwater Clays produces a wide range of clay bodies using fireclays, ball clays, kaolin, and stoneware clays. All the clay bodies consist of complex compositions and must be mixed into one reliable consistency.
